Kenya has become one of the hotbeds of the gambling industry across the African continent, and gambling is considered regular practice among Kenyan households.

With the rise of more opportunities, gambling has become a regular part of the Kenyan lifestyle, with everyone taking part in this lucrative business.

Three major factors explain why betting craze has become one of the nation’s norm:

First, and perhaps the very obvious reason among the three, is the enticing opportunity to instantly win money. With an easy way to amass a fortune in just one night, many people across a wide range of demographics would jump on the hype train, tempted by the reports and testimonials of instant millionaires.

Also, a leading cause while this factor exists is because of the large number of jobless graduates who are burdened with issues regarding inflation and job cuts, causing them to place their bets on Lady Luck instead due to a difficult chance to land on a job.

Which highlights the second factor: the current state of the Kenyan society. With a large number of jobless youth because of Kenya’s current industry being unable to support its young population, a big number of young adults are lured into the betting industry to sustain themselves. And with an abundance of makeshift casinos everywhere, the majority of the unemployed find a living towards this burgeoning industry instead.

Lastly, the growing unemployment rate is just heightened by Kenya’s technological boom, acting as a catalyst that raised the stakes even higher. With the establishment of a robust telecom industry, Kenya has experienced a major boom in the availability of the internet towards its citizens.

And with Kenya having an edge from its African neighbors in terms of connectivity, the gambling industry benefitted the most. This created a surge in the influx of gamblers especially from the youth population, who are generally more adept in utilizing technology.

These are just three among the many that explain why Kenya is investing more into this growing industry but for better or worse, the country still has a long way to see if they can turn this in a boon, or become a bane to them.
